Every month I come to Debark to work on the Internet, fundraising for Empress Mentewab School and dealing with e-mail correspondence.
I stay at the Giant Lobelia Hotel, a fairly new hotel on the main road through the centre of town. Every year more hotels open in Debark to serve the growing number of tourists who come to visit the Simien Mountains National Park.
The hotel is named after the lobelias in the Simien Mountains. These plants grow very large.
Giant Lobelia Hotel
The Giant Lobelia Hotel faces east, so the morning sun warms its east-facing rooms and restaurant. There are fine views too. The accommodation and food are very reasonably priced. And, being new, the hotel is clean and in good condition. The food is satisfactory and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

I always take a room on the east side of the hotel - I prefer the morning sun (the rooms on the other side of the hotel are lit by the late afternoon sun). On market days (Wednesdays and Saturdays) I enjoy watching the farmers and their animals coming to and fro along the main street. At other times I can follow the progress of the road construction outside the hotel - a new road is being built from Gondar to Debark.
If you are planning a visit to Debark, I recommend the Giant Lobelia Hotel as a comfortable and central place to stay. Remember - there is no heating in any hotel in Debark, and at 2,900 metres altitude, it can be cold (especially in the rainy season), so bring warm clothes.
The hotel is owned by Mrs Ambelnesh. The manager, Jejaw, speaks English well. To make a booking, please contact him:
