More than 1,000 Dogs in Gondar City
city dogs poisoned by Gondar's Public Health Department because of fear of rabies
The Public Health Department of Gondar city poisons dogs to reduce their numbers and to minimise risk of rabies transmission to humans.
The poisoning is done at night. Victims are mostly family pets who are allowed to roam. The dead bodies are not always cleared away promptly. The strychnine gets into the food chain, killing other animals and birds.
