2012 December - Straw Mattresses for Gymnastics
At the beginning of December, Kate bought two straw mattresses from a shop in Debark on the main market day, Saturday (the other market day is Wednesday). In Ethiopia straw mattresses are used on the floor or on beds by those who cannot afford a foam mattress to sleep on; they cost only 70 birr each (about £2).

In this picture, the man with the mattresses makes his living carrying loads to and from the market. He carried the two mattresses from the shop to a hired vehicle that transported Kate and supplies to Dib Bahir, a road journey of half an hour.
At Empress Mentewab School, straw mattresses are used for gymnastics: the schoolchildren do front rolls over them.
