Empress Mentewab School
Learning to play the Recorder
In Semester 2 of the 2011-12 academic year, Kate began teaching the Infants 2 class to play the descant recorder and to read and write music. However, in future she will start teaching recorder-playing in the first semester of Grade 1.
Pupils compose their own tunes and perform them for their classmates. When they are good enough, they will perform for visitors to the school.
Because of the risk of disease (tuberculosis, meningitis) transmission, the children do not share recorders: they have one each at school. Their school recorder is new and is their "best" recorder; it remains at school.
"I would like each pupil to have a secondhand recorder that they can keep at home," says Kate. "Their home recorder would be used by other family members, and the schoolchildren could teach them to play too. This recorder is likely to be chipped and scratched, so is for practice only - not for performing at school."
