Empress Mentewab School is a non-profit social enterprise run by Kate and her family to provide a high-quality education for children from poor families in the community of Dib Bahir in the northern Ethiopian Highlands.
The school relies entirely on donations, including school fees paid by benefactors.
Kate with Grade 1
For the 2015-16 academic year, the school has three classes (and three teachers to teach them) - Grade 4, Grades 3 and 2 combined, and Grade 1 and Infants combined. A fourth teacher concentrates on improving literacy in Amharic and English, working turn by turn with groups of four primary pupils drawn from the classes. The school day is from 9 am until 4.30 pm, with a break for lunch (12.30 pm to 2 pm). The Infants finish early before lunch and at the end of the day.
